In the second half of the 19th century, a new activity appeared in the Briançon area: tourism. With summer and winter sports expanding fast, the area soon enjoyed widespread fame.
Since July 2008, Briancon is among the Vauban fortified sites placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Architecture and Heritage Department of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication awards the label "Villes et pays d'art et d'histoire" to local communities which enhance and make the most of their heritage.
Vauban arrived in Briançon in autumn 1692, shortly after a serious attack by the Duke of Savoy. At first sight, he realised the place would be difficult to defend as it was totally surrounded with mountain stowering above it.
Enjoy the tale of Briançon, "Ville d'art et d'histoire" accompanied by a conference guide registered by the French Ministry of Culture.
Running parallel to the guided tours, activities are on offer all year round for school children and locals. Information: The Heritage "activity" Service
